Personality

Anna was raised in a household of strict manners and loyalty. Despite her upbringing though, she has a deeply ingrained sense of adventure and mischief. Anna is highly courteous, but is on the underside actually quite skeptical of people and slow to trust; emotions which she keeps well hidden at all times. Anna is much more interested in getting away with things, than in following the spirit of the law, and when out of the watchful gaze of her father she bends many rules. After growing up with an emotionally repressed and distant father, Anna has shrunk her true thoughts into a secret monologue within her heart, so that her perception of the world is entirely different than the social mask of etiquette and cheerfulness which she portrays.

Background

Anna Knowlton was born in Bridgeton in the year 31AF to her parents Alexander and Katherine, in their house up on the western hill beside South Gate. Her mother Katherine was killed when she was very young--barely one year old--during an invasion from Dalmarite troops in the first Dalmar-Bridgeton War. Their house was burned, and Anna barely survived the disaster by being rescued by a man named Yorma. Yorma took Anna to his wife Polly, and the two of them adopted her as their own. They fled Bridgeton with the young infant during the invasion, and settled a modest farm in the fertile lands just to the north. It was three years before Anna's father Alexander found out that his daughter had survived the disaster, and tracked her down to Yorma and Polly's farm. The two farmers didn't argue, and gave Anna back over to her father.
From that day on Anna's life drastically changed. Alexander was barely fit to be a father, and his work as the Chief of Marines in Bridgeton kept him on call a lot of the time. As a result Anna spent much of her time with nannies and babysitters during her childhood, and her father remained a mysterious and distant figure to whom she was endlessly loyal; longing to spend any moment she could with him. Anna's house was constantly visited by other Bridgeton Marines, sometimes for quick visits, sometimes for supper. As a result, Anna developed many Uncle/Niece relationships with the rugged soldier men, and was taught by their hardened philosophies.
In 42AF, when Anna was eleven, Bridgeton was sieged by the Last Plague, and she fled the city with her father to the south as it was destroyed. With her home ruined and cursed by death, she sadly followed her father across the White Sea to Greendale in the north, where she helped her father open up a business; the Mad Gander Tavern and Lodge. There she and Alexander lived and worked together, depending totally on one another for support, for six long years. During this time Alexander filled Anna's head with stories of the Bridgeton of her childhood, and the two great rulers he had known. Anna developed a ravenous interest in the old blackpowder technology which Bridgeton had once wielded, and in the old Engineer's Guild which Garrett Church had started, and which now had several chapters all around the world.
When Anna turned seventeen, she decided that she would leave home and pursue an apprenticeship with the Engineer's Guild, so she left home in search of fancy and adventure.
