Information

Personality

He is a soldier first and foremost; aloof, terse, and sharp are the best words to describe him and any other able-bodied man. He is reserved which makes him objective, dense but these are all characteristics befitting of a man of the military but he is not without his loyalties. However, in combat, he adheres to a zero-tolerance rule, arbitrarily cold blooded and ruthless and not unlike a demon.

Proficiencies

Cliff is an expert when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, so much that he has integrated his own technique along with other pre-existing forms: he has incorporated judo, jujitsu, and advanced close-quarter-combat techniques. A fundamental to any soldier requires the basic handling of firearms, Cliff, being a prominent sharpshooter has varying degrees of expertise. He is also an exceptional hunter which includes (but not limited to): his ability to track and mask his trail and to identify foot prints for tracking purposes. He has basic education on first aid that lets him treat most non-critical injuries.

Inventory

Cliff's person only supports the bare minimum plus a few treats for himself, most notably a carton of Lucky Strike. To describe him: a katana and a fireman ax on his left hip, a boltwinder on the opposite hip, a boltwinder Mk. III is mounted on his back, he usually wears his light-blue scarf around his neck, he sports a number of knives with different uses, and the rest are smaller items collected along his belt, including: throwing knives, tin cans, rations and a few other knick-knacks.

History

Prelude, Two-Handed Warrior

"Gakuen no Ken."

There were forty-six students enrolled into the school and that was the maximum number of students allowed to attend. The regiment was strict: a student must follow a fixated diet, and participate in daily training exercises that helped build stamina, speed and power, to stretch the body's limbs and ligaments in order to perform otherwise, difficult body maneuvers. Every student wasn't very different from the next in terms of physique or finesse, save for the impossibility of genetics. It was highly arduous and taxing, but most of the students gave it their all, including Cliff who had less trouble compared to the others. He often worked alone because others were afraid of him, his ears were anomalous since he was the only one with elven blood there; this fault caused him to become independent, making his experience with cooperating very amateur.

Eventually, he graduated from the school and when he did, he graduated from his former life as well. For a child, he was quite talented with a weapon but this came as no surprise as he was educated early on. He often used his swordsmanship as a way to barter with the ferry fee.

When he reached Kharlia for the first time, he decided to stay for awhile because of the diverse setting and people. He could be lax without having to worry about anyone judging him because of his heritage. His expertise with the sword earned him several but minor reputations. He ultimately decided on a name after learning elementary Kharlian, leaving his old name behind; Cliff extended into a long term pseudonym. Sometime during his adolescence, he entered the mercenary business but as a young man and a newbie, he was hardly ever called upon, or even looked upon. His career as a mercenary didn't jump start until later. He was hired by a young grocer who he failed to protect but he still felt obligated to kill the assailants and he did but it was too late and he was nearly dead because of it. When he already accepted his death, he was abruptly rescued by a young man, he offered his fighting experience for living expenses and so a deal was made.

Chapter 1, Begin

"Cliff arrives at the military scene, a field he knows all too well; he brandishes his crossbow and flourishes his hair. It sounds like, war, an old friend, to bring up the sword and shield again, he feels like fiery ambition."

Cliff arrived from a ship located a few islands away from the mainland and served as a sell sword in exchange for his transportation. During the voyage, he met a number of the passengers, albeit, indirectly; most of them were merchants, others, like himself, full-fledged mercenaries. This was a few days after the feud of Valikorlia and Dalmar had begun, this was an opportunity for most of the passengers to make names for themselves. Cliff, on the other hand, had a different plan in mind but the war intervened with them, eventually, he found himself caught up in the business.

When he arrived at the docks of New Lucca, he parted ways with the others and passed through the port city, hastily making way towards Valikorlia which he would later fight alongside. Despite it being a superficial relationship, he maintained good graces because he shared the same ill opinion of Dalmar. After the war between Valikorlia and Dalmar ended, he became a vagrant once more. Even though he forgot his original plan, he stuck around with the outlaw Frost Elf, Issenval Avinanna.

After the conclusion of the war, Cliff and his comrade, Issenval Avinanna materialized the Leeway Brigade. Albeit, Cliff accepted the idea, he has been rather sour towards it which ultimately led up to his resignation. Though, sometime after, he eventually reconciled with the Leeway Brigade and lent a helping hand to the destruction of the Ignis Fatuus mage tower. Afterwards, he stopped by The Troll's Pub at Eonos Bridge where he found a warrant for himself.

He didn't let the mark bother his routine; he was eventually hired as a personal bodyguard by Irvine Zamuel Hakor for 9001 kerous, however, it was short lived and he became a bouncer instead at the Dragon Belly Inn sometime after. The work didn't offer much pay in the coming months, due to the absence of the bar manager, and the constant assassinations of the help, these combined caused him to effectively leave the job.

Chapter 2, Chrysalis

"Cliff looks over the newspapers as he tries to keep up with his daily nicotine intake. Nothing here, nothing there. He returns it to the stand and returns to the streets, his usual canter keeping him on a road to a place he hoped was fit for him."

Cliff, without a job, went from one place to another, much alike a drifter. However, his unemployment ended during a routine stop to Ganelon Inn, his usual haunts; there, he met Johnathan J. Walken who offered him a position in Durandal as an airman. But, this wasn't meant to be as Johnathan left on a mission or other and soon, he found himself stuck in another dead end job. Luckily for him, a law enforcement unit called the Road Wardens opened recruitment for able bodied people who fit the job.

Figuring his time at Durandal was better spent elsewhere, he resigned his position and filled out the Road Warden application immediately and was accepted by Gaffer Tallingway on the spot. The marshal was even kind of enough to withdraw the warrant that had followed the soldier so long, Cliff didn't mind it if it existed or not but it definitely undid some knots in his life. He found himself more pre-occupied as it mostly involved fieldwork and he was able to knock some heads together for "justice." The only downside would be that he has to write a report on everything that is suspicious or is not law abiding which he has less than zero interest doing but it's required either way.

Views

War

"Fire and brimstone."

He isn't above killing a person but he finds that a person should not fight for no reason and that a person should have more motivation for going to war than just patriotism or heroics. While he will support the war effort, he does not necessarily enjoy fighting as he finds it a bit disturbing that he's gotten so used to it. Though, he will admit, it does feel good to kill someone now and then.

Love

"Bug off if you have nothing useful to say."

Due to his sheltered and strict discipline, he has not experienced affection or intimacy of any kind, ever. The only type of love he has ever felt was from his grandmother who was more concerned about him being raised properly than him being raised lovingly. The result bred an adamant, loner with a rough exterior; he doesn't feel that it is necessary as he believes it would get in his way. When confronted with love, he would most likely regard it as a strange and useless behavior, he is entirely not a fan.

Magic

"As if."

He is extremely disrespectful to any magician, regardless of whatever good deeds they've done because he is given a one-sided story: that all magic is bad. He would not murder a magician out of cold blood though, he just really hates their company. He has been known to acknowledge some inventions that were developed with the help of magic, however. He is also not above using enchantments despite how contradicting it is to his views. If you were to ask him why he used magical trinkets, his answer will almost always be: Mind your own business.
