History

Built unto the Stray Peaks that once housed the Dalmarite Oungmund mines, Durandal is a free haven of industry.

As the great war raged on, and Dalmar's Machinators were pressed to create bigger and more powerful machines to fuel the effort, a schism began to form in the creating circles. Many of the mages and artificers in the capitol fled to Dalmar to continue their work after the rise of the hateful Templar in Valikorlia, and had no care for the current war stirred by their Imperialistic new home.

With nowhere left to flee and in danger of being hunted for treason were they to deviate the nation, the machinators formed a plot to destroy the leading nobles and military heads of Dalmar.

In theory, the Machinators only needed to set off an explosion at one end of the southland mines to cause a chain reaction down the entire line, destroying large deposits they planted in key locations within both Gulderic and Selnic that would almost certainly end the war.

In execution, the explosions caused in the much larger than anticipated ore deposits caused the 'Great Divide', the land shifting event that would see not only Dalmar's entire destruction, but split Kharlia into three separate continents altogether.

The divide displaced a great quantity of land in all directions. Some of it, which was flung skywards, never came down... So infused with raw Oungmund and mana, they mysteriously held unto the sky in endless flight, tethered by the flow of leylines in the area as if in nets.

Necessity is the mother of invention. The machinators that survived the destruction of Dalmar had found the perfect new home: filled to the brim with the source of their research, and free from the scalping hands of oppressive governments and religions, Durandal was born.

Several years later, Durandal faces a new crisis: Oungmund is a finite resource, and continuing to mine it may doom their city altogether. In hopes of finding a new way of creating the material themselves, they have rebuilt the fallen Ignis Fatuus at the price of arcane research.
