History

The Rumor

Godfrie of Limbury was one of the mighty order of Holy Knights in the now-fallen kingdom of Dunham. In his younger years, he used simply a forged steel sword made for him by the castle smith at his home in Limbury. Godfrie rarely traveled his country, for his duties here at his manor, defending the river-crossing from the east whence came the Meridiemese Orcs that constantly attacked and encroached upon Dunham's people. However, when one day a traveler came through town telling tale of a mountain in the northern ranges which had caverns stretching deep into the black earth. In this cave, told the rumor, was a lair of great treasures, among which was a mighty sword that was forged by Saurvold Himself in the fires of Malgotha. The lair was guarded by walls of flame, and pits of great fire, and it was said no man would be able to claim the fire god's treasure.

The Capture

Dismissing the tale, Godfrie kept his oath of selflessness in forgetting the temptation of the riches of the cave, and for years and years it left his mind completely as he stayed fast in his defense against the orcs. On day though, almost twelve years later, a cunning band of witch orcs captured a throng of villagers and escaped with them, north out of Limbury and into the countryside of Dunham. Godfrie, by this time one of the good King Hampton's most trusted generals, was on one of his many trips to Weston at the time, and receiving word of the incident left the northern city to attempt to meet the orcish band from the north and thwart them.

The Cave

Godfrie's party met with the orcs and chased them west into the mountains near Weston, and the orcs fled into a deep dark cave with their prisoners, planning to use them as food as they lost the soldiers in the twisting recesses. Instead though, Godfrie and the others followed the orcs right inside, and chased them to the brink of a great chasm. There the coward orcs made a stand against the soldiers and the holy knight, and many of them were slain. When finally only one of the beasts remained, and the villagers had been rescued, the orc grabbed a small boy and ran with him to the edge of the chasm and leapt into the black depths with the child clutched in his arms. The light of the soldiers' torches didn't stretch all the way into the deep and the way was black and unknown, but Godfrie ran and dove into the hole after the boy without a second thought to his own safety.

The Chamber of Treasure

Several minutes later, Godfrie reemerged from the chasm, climbing up with the little boy, and a great prize clutched in his hand, the holy sword Excalior. Godfrie told the tale that when he fell into the blackness, he found himself suddenly in the ancient lair of treasure that the traveler had told him of so many year before, and that a vision of Saurvold had come to him, and he had blessed Godfrie's valor and his selfless act, and granted him entrance to it. Godfrie claimed the holy sword, and then once again found himself in the blackness of the deep, and slew the orc, and returned with the young boy and his prize. He returned then to Limbury with his charges and his new holy weapon.

The Sword

Excalior is a holy sword forged by the god of Chaotic Light, Saurvold. The metal of its make is unplaceable, as the surface of its blade is a slight burnt-gold color, and has very little mirror or shine. The mineral of Excalior is said to originate in the fire-plane of Malgotha, the domain of Saurvold, and cannot be found in the realm of men. The blade is enchanted with immense divine light, giving it a great power over all evil beings or objects. In addition, the sword grants unto the wielder a great amount of unnatural bad luck, forcing the wielder of Excalior to be selfless in continuing to carry the weapon. Excalior is a bastard sword that is forty-two inches in length, blade, hilt, and handle, and its blade is three and a half inches across at the base, and tapers gently to its point. The blade has a deep blood channel down its center, and a ruby set in the center of its hilt-guard on either side of the weapon, in which are carved the holy symbols of Saurvold. The blade itself is runed with the holy scriptures of the fire god, lining the blood channel on either side, the entire length of the blade.
