Research
Quasi Element
Obsidian
Atrum Terra
(Dark Earth)
Obsidian is the quasi-element of Arcane and Earth magic. The use of this para-element takes experience and practice. Only the most dedicated Earth magi can master Obsidian. Not only that but it is largely undiscovered. It would be practically impossible to use unless apprenticed. The border plane of Obsidian is a sleek and dark endless dome of large obsidian outcroppings. The only thing to really look forward to on this plane is the bit of rare color obsidian sometimes has. If you traveled deep enough into the plane you would run into a plateau covered with fissures giving off a hot and dense smoke. Looking up from the deep cracks you'd see a spectacular obsidian canyon. Landforms like this continue on until you reach the next plane which is seemingly forever away.Occasionally you see a loose piece of obsidian slightly elevated from the surface.
Obsidian is shaper than any blade. It can cut through steel. Being realistic it can't plow through thick rock walls or barriers, typically of a fortress. Its sharpness is what makes it such a valuable quasi-element. The unpracticed mage must be very careful, there own magic could become their undoing. Also a strange reaction occurs on this plane. The obsidian seems to have slight anti-gravitational properties that can hold a medium sized person 3 or 4 ft off the ground. Brute force and blunt weaponry are the best tactic against the obsidian. If hit at the right angle most obsidian formations will shatter like glass, especially the larger ones.
Theoretical Spells
Obsidian Knuckles
[EARTH(Obsidian)- Manipulation: ?]
Duration: 2 turns
Cooldown: N/A
Range: Melee
Target: Offensive or Defensive. Used to multiply damage inflicted on enemies or to block melee attacks.
Effect: The mage's knuckles are transformed into obsidian. The hands are not weighed down because of the unique properties involved in the spell provides a
lightening effect, so the mage can punch as if normal.
Obsidian Spire
[EARTH(Obsidian)- Manipulation: ?]
Duration: 4 turns
Cooldown: 1 turn
Range: 5 ft radius
Target: Offensive.Enemy or possible small barriers.
Effect: The mage summons an obsidian spire close (20 ft radius) to his or her location. The obsidian can cut through armor. It could also slash or stab a person like a blade. The appearance of the spire is not immediate, meaning a character with fast reactions would have sometime to dodge if they aren't committed in their movements.
Obsidian Octahedron(s)
[EARTH(Obsidian)- Manipulation: ?]
Duration: 3 turns
Cooldown: N/A
Range: 5 ft radius
Target: Defensive. Mostly against human based melee attacks.
Effect: After 3 full turns of limited movement and focus three fist sized octahedrons are summoned and because of the obsidian's anti-gravitational properties the octahedrons float like wisps around the caster. As if they have artificial intelligence the octahedrons deflect and defend against any incoming attacks. The octahedrons dissipate after defending against one attack each. There defense is not absolute an arrow shot by a crossbow would not likely be blocked, but any melee based attack limited to human capabilities would be deflected. As for other magic spells the octahedrons are mostly limited to only being able to defend melee based attacks, but an octahedron does have a chance at deflecting fireball, assuming they do travel slower than high velocity projectiles such as arrows. As for a spell like tidal wave, no chance of blocking or anyother spell that would obviously be overwhelming for one octahedron to block.
Spells
(Earth) Noah's Earth Dome
Casting time: 3 turns
The mage summons rock and earth from the earth plane and forms a dome with in a 10 meter radius of the mage. This spell could be used to protect the mage or to temporarily trap an opponent. It last for 3 turns and can be broken by mundane or magical attacks, if strong enough. The dome is roughly 2 meters high and has a radius of 2.5 meters.
Rank II: Can be cast in one turn with 3 turns cool down.
(Earth)
Noah's Geode Cannon
Cast Time: 2 Turns, Simple Spell
The mage summons a geode the size of their fist into a their palm, and then throws it. It a magical force behind it not just the strength of the mage's throw. The rock can knock an opponent down, crush bones, make bruises, and dent armor, depending on the distance and accuracy of the throw.
Rank II: Summons in 1 turn with 1 turn cool down
Experiences
An Ambitious Mage
An ambitious mage, whose most beautiful experience is the mysterious, the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of the elements, is doomed to be consumed by evil. No man chooses evil because it is evil. He only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks, because when he hasn't seen the glow of happiness on the face of a beloved person, he knows not that a man can have the ability to awaken that light on the faces surrounding him. Without this information he is rendered, essentially, selfish. Selfish men seek power, knowledge is power. With knowledge the mysterious is vanquished, leaving only an ugly soul driven by personal gain, but the possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery. That is the incredible contradiction that is Noah Adams.
Hope for the Hopeless
It was a rainy day in Ganelon not long ago when Noah met Grand Crusader Celosos. Noah will remember him as the man with the demon attire. Celosos came limping into town beaten and knocked down. Blood was leaking from his chest as he had been impaled a few times. Despite the mans outwardly demonic appearance, Noah rushed over to help without a second thought. This was probably the doing of Noah's Neckless of Principle, considering Noah's one principle is to put the welfare of others beyond his own interests. At first, the stubborn man refused Noah's helped, but Noah persisted. Eventually Celosos wearily stumbled to the middle of the town where he collapsed, right in front of his lover. War torn and bleeding Celosos' lover didn't know what to make of the situation and enlisted for Noah's aid. Together they dragged him to his sanctuary where Celosos' life began to dwindle. No one thought he would live through the night, when Noah began to tell a story called, The Short Race, a memory from his childhood. Celosos' spirits began to lift. He had survived his encounter with death.
Parables
The Hunter and the Fox
Once there was a hunter chasing a fox and he caught it was just about to kill it when he saw the king approaching. As fox hunting was illegal, he put the fox inside his coat and kept him there. The king greeted him and began to talk to him, asking him how he was. "How are you today?" "Oh, I am very good, your majesty." The king discussed the weather and different topics with the hunter, who remained completely cool the whole time. He never even slightly acted like anything was amiss. And then the king left. As soon as the king was out of sight, the hunter fell into two pieces on the ground, as the fox had eaten him in half.
The Frogs in the Bucket
Once two frogs had fallen into a milk pot, and were drowning. After struggling to keep afloat for some time, one frog gave up hope and drowned. The other frog, however, was more determined and he kicked and kicked, despite the hopeless situation. But due to all this kicking in milk, a hard lump of butter was formed and by standing on this, the frog was able to jump out of the bucket.
Rumors
The book is rumored to contain spells so powerful that if used the mage would die. The rumors speak of spells that can create mountains, shake the earth, and tear continents apart. Although the rumors may or may not be true the book does hold some great spell research.
