Preface

This is the perspective of Pre-Kharlia from me, Kaddar. It would be nice to have several perspectives on the period few are left to do so, even fewer have concrete memory of the time. Because of this, I will try to provide as little bias as I can in the actual history. I have written this in first person perspective, but if anyone else perfers third person, feel free to change it. I feel it sounds more natural this way.

In pre-Kharlia, roleplaying was more action oriented. This means that any actual battles must be done with swords and stats. Players were to play as though they were members of a nation and were encouraged to protect that nation.

The Abyssal War was a roleplaying event that was the work of Lazarus, and was created outside of the normal realm of Valikorlian roleplaying. It served to change forever the style of roleplaying on Valikorlia, moving it from what I feel was a casual action-roleplaying graal server to a more serious in-character roleplaying server.

Lazarus's roleplaying was more literate. It was similar to independant, chat-room, old fashioned roleplaying. In that sense, it was better roleplaying. Unfortunately, it occurred on Valikorlia, it was the most improper type of roleplaying for Valikorlia. And I heavily frown upon it. This is because it was power-roleplaying. Power roleplaying occurs when characters are too powerful compared to the rest of the population of a server, and that the power is granted by the players themselves, not by a controller of the server. This created elitism as players made things up the normal population could do nothing about. "I counter your counter-ability" roleplaying becomes commonplace. The internal history of the roleplaying group becomes different of that of the rest of the server. This was the reason roleplaying a God was banned on Valikorlia, this is the reason only admins with file upload access could give concrete roleplaying powers in a physical form, and make changes to the world.

After most of the primary owners stopped working on the server (Drakaden, Gestahl, Tyne, Malak, Kaddar), the server was left to the remaining admins. I feel it was a step in the wrong direction to remove all old Valikorlian history, and that the server should have been renamed. I fought for this heavily in the forums at the time.

Personally, I ignored these until I left, not thinking that they would destroy the true history of Valikorlia. After I left, I encouraged players to recreate this abyssal war server with a different name, as it was unfair to keep a name for a server which was clearly not the same. It troubles me deeply to see that server has survived as an empty shell, without the fun, adventure, and questing involved in old Valikorlia (Pre-Kharlia Valikorlia)

I will try to italicize out of character actions. Note this history was written in a style not to make it sound interesting, but to state what happens. I apologize if it does not seem very interesting to current players, it was written merely to pay tribute to the origins of the world.

Time Period Of this Article

After the war between the Neos and the rebels, and somewhat after Athedia came into existance

Before Kharlia

Kharlia being tyne's 8 player privately hosted server, a combination of his server, Gadistia, and an old-level version of Valikorlia

People

  • Drakaden was the leader of the Dragoons, and created Valikorlia
  • Dellita was the leader of the outlaws, and his brother, and logged in from time to time on his computer
  • Jagus was the leader of Athedia, his friend, and helped work on the server in the early days
  • Gestahl was the leader of Taron, and became admin eventually
  • Paladin was the leader of Dalmars

Post-Neo Rebel War

Dalmar and taron were ex-enemies, now strong allies, and were in a war against Athedia. The Athedians were temporarily chased out of Valikorlia.

There were gates to the town, you could not get in a town if you were not part of that nation unless someone left the gate open. War occured where people would chase each other to their town gates. People sometimes snuck into others towns.

Player killing was allowed, as long as it was in good nature, for example, between characters in warring nations. Player killing was not roleplayed as the final death of the character. An exception to this rule was when it was an antagonist or protagonist created specifically for a roleplaying event

Nation Building Period

Most people spent time working on earning money for their Nation. Each player would donate to a town's bank, and if the person had donated enough, he could buy a shop, and make more profit, or help build a hospital. Taron's mayor was Gestahl, Dalmar's mayor was paladin. Money was important, gained by bush farming and mining. Each nation had a "Nova Traders" trading booth, but it wasn't very profitable.

Atrus was leader of the elves, the elves had a major enemy in a dark elf. There were battles between the elves and the dark elf in which humans assited the elves in salvation.

The fun of Valikorlia was originally trying to out-earn other nations. If I recall correctly, the valikorlian hospital (built north of level13, that multiple nations earned) cost around 400,000. An airship cost 200,000.

A later misunderstanding of Valikorlia proper races would cause a new drow race to come into existance, not acknowledging their past history with the elves or their half-dark elf history in znowmania

The Dragoons

Dragoonia was the name of the land the Dragoons lived in. There were few Dragoons at the time. "You had to be born a Dragoon". Raijin is the only non-Dragoon to ever become one. Drakaden was the leader. Dragoonia was a "neutral race", created to promote peace and neutrality between nations. Originally, there was no direct link to Dragoonia from Valikorlia, but A portal to Dragoonia was created on the center of the continent during christmas one year.

This event occured around the same time A hall of fame was established listing all active people in Valikorlia.

The center of the continent was the unstick me level, level13.graal, this center also had an arena, but was not a town.

The first dark dragoon

The Dark dragoon was a person who gained power from a magical evil mask. The Dark Dragoon was not a race, like the Dragoons, but rather a corrupted Dragoon. There could only be one Dark Dragoon and were few Dragoons. He was eventually slain and the mask was sealed.

Later, there was 1 more major single Dark Dragoon event before the dark dragoon storyline was changed so that there could be more than just the person who had the mask. Dark Dragoons as a race was either a misunderstanding of the original story, a desire for there to be more Dark Dragoons on the server, or a desire for that player to be leader of an evil all power race. It was explained after the fact that the power of the mask had been extracted. I forget who created the race form, was it cloud, or maybe kain? Personally, I felt this was an aspect of power-roleplaying.

I believe Jagus, the person, roleplayed as the character who was the first Dark Dragoon. Jagus, the character, was not a Dark Dragoon, but he was leader of Athedia.

The First King and New World

Draz was the first king of Valikorlia. At the time, Valikorlia was considered the world, and all nations were part of the world of Valikorlia.

He never really meant to be king, drakaden appointed him. He wasn't a very active king. He didn't do much. He soon became idle and stopped playing for a period, returning after the next king.

There was a boat in the north west area of Valikorlia. During a major roleplaying event, players boarded it and travelled to the new world. The Znowmen were discovered in the New World. Discovering the place first, I became friend of znowmen, and eventually mayor of znowmen town, town became the nation znowmania and I was the leader. Yet even later on, it's name was changed to Frost.

I am not sure if Drakaden made him a king out of character, or during roleplaying.

The Second King

SniperJoe10 was appointed king by Drakaden due to Draz's inactivity. The royal castle was created. The King created a Royal Army of Valikorlia.

I banned znowmen from joining the royals because I figured that we weren't considered part of Valikorlia yet, being a separate island, "the new world". In later roleplaying, there would be a misunderstanding, and it would be interpreted that Valikorlia was separate from taron and dalmar, it's own nation.

Drakaden, the player, decided to create the royal army, perhaps out of intrest in creating a new roleplaying character, named "Lance" who was the leader of the army. (Not to be confused with any other Lance on Post Kharlian Valikorlia) I called the name of the army the Royals for short, and it stuck. In newer Valikorlia, for some reason, it became it's own nation, which conflicted with prior usage; it was either the continent or the world of the server prior.

Ze Wreckening

Athedia's airship crashlanded on znowmania. It was there too long. Being untrusting, the outlaws, assisted by znowmen destroyed the airship. In response, the destroyed airship obliterated znowmania. This was a very confusing storyline, and there was much debate on the actual events that lead to znowmania being destroyed. If it was at all.

Here is the description, without my bias, from kain's profile in the old Valikorlia site:

"Kain Profile: Wants to make an Athedian airforce. Counterstriked the Znowmen for helping destroy his airship wiping them off the face of the planet. Is an all around nice guy but has a very bad temper. Runs the Athedia Airship. Is also know as Kain (Senior GP Captain) on graalonline."

Unbalancing Act

Some Herbist powers appeared, and all people in the world of Valikorlia were able to gain the power. All People of Valikorlia had mage abilities for a time by simply saying a specific phrase.

It threw off action-roleplaying battles, and made players camp out of distance making flame walls" Although, players already had the ability to pause during battle, and some admins would often use warp rings to leave battle during a fight. Clearly, there were balance issues in the action-roleplaying. You could even cast the mage ability, which created a fire explosion, while paused.

The server then was shut down. Apparently drakaden deleted the files by mistake. I am not sure if it was clear exactly how they were lost. He had a backup that was rather old and did not want to restart back in time so far. This was the end of Valikorlia.

The End of Time?

Here is the internet archive at that moment in time:

(Unfortunately, you can only see forum topics, not posts) http://web.archive.org/web/20000709120033/http://www3.bravenet.com/forum/show.asp?usernum=1276421207

Atrus made a Valikorlia server, and in disgust of the direction he took, I began working on a separate Valikorlia server, trying to capture the old neowars style nation battles.

In the end, Gestahl was given the backup files from drakaden, and instantly became owner of Valikorlia. He had no scripting ability. Scripting abilities were important, because there was no remote-file access for the majority of old servers. The backup files were before the period of the first king, and therefore before the Valikorlian castle was created. It was even before the New World event, so we had a problem. Tyne, who was working on a server called Gadistia, at the time, decided to host and work on Valikorlia for Gestahl. Eventually, the two servers were merged. This is what began the server known as Kharlia. (Kharlia = gadista + Valikorlia)

Closing

So there you have it, feel free to try and fill in blanks if you were around then. I left out the orc portal to the orc world, I was away for some of the orc stuff. I also left out some of the original outlaws stuff (before dellita did the airship event with me), I came too late for the chicken theives rp events lord chimp lead. I also left out some of the sheriff things, (sniperjoe10 was a sheriff before being king). If you add subheadings, either write that you wrote them, or change this history such that it is no longer first person perspective.
