The Runic Tablets are ten unique artifacts created by the circle-master Eurogynes. After much research, the Archlich unveiled ancient runic rituals for binding and storing great amounts of power-- power required to create and stabilize a portal strong enough to allow himself to enter the mortal realm of Kharlia. Each tablet represents a different circle of the Abyss, and borrows it's name from them as well. They are primarily used as a focus for creating and maintaining portals.

History

After siphoning a great deal of energy from the Abyss, Eurogynes introduced the tablets to the mortal realm, but was defeated before he could establish the proper control mechanism for the tablets to be used permanently. These tablets and the energies contain therein introduced a level of power never before seen by the peoples of the mortal realm, and while they were latent, the risk of falling into the wrong hands was great. Knowing that the tablets could cause an apocalyptic scenario to unfold, the heroes of the time collected the ten and spread them across the world. Some were placed with virtuous and capable people, while others were spirited away to great dungeons or hidden locations.

Years later, Tervana sought after these tablets in order to power his incantation and wreak havoc on the world of Kharlia. Planning to use an intricate spell to suceed where Eurogynes had failed by creating a permanent rift, Tervana scoured the world for the tablets before finally being defeated, his spell backfiring and causing a great sinkhole to emerge. During these events, the people of the world saw first-hand what types of creatures lived in the Abyss with the advent of the Doom Beasts.
